Bureau of Human Resources Deputy Assistant Secretary Philippe Lussier gave remarks at the locally employed (LE) staff nameplate unveiling ceremony last December. The event honored the lives of seven LE staff who worked for the Department of State and U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM) at U.S. Embassies abroad when they lost their lives. Representatives from the USAGM attended, as well as principal officials from the Bureau of Diplomatic Security and each of the regional bureaus of the LE staff honored. “[LE staff] are truly the backbone of our institutions. Their work is indispensable to advancing our foreign policy goals at more than 276 embassies and consulates worldwide,” said Lussier.

Department honors lives of fallen LE Staff

The 2018 Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) Summit in Singapore sent 125 YSEALI participants from all 10 member nations of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the United States on a tour of American businesses that are technology and innovation leaders in the Indo-Pacific. The InnovateTour of Citi, Google, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, HP Singapore, nuTonomy, Procter & Gamble, Unilever and Verizon gave participants a chance to learn firsthand about the innovative programs and approaches driving these companies. The 2018 YSEALI Summit, which marked the program’s 5th anniversary, was titled “U.S. and ASEAN–Partners in Growth and Innovation.”

Ambassador’s visit highlights socio-economic relations

Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) Assistant Secretary Kirsten D. Madison presents a pin to a Kyiv Patrol Police Academy graduate during a visit to Ukraine last October. Through a partnership with Ukraine’s Ministry of Internal Affairs, INL supported the overhaul and rollout of the more than 16,000-member Patrol Police nationwide, which replaced the corrupt and inefficient traffic police with a protect-and-serve force. Public approval for the new Patrol Police units reached an unprecedented 70 percent shortly after the launch. This major police reform also improved public perception of the police force from less than 1 percent of the public fully trusting the police in 2013 to nearly 45 percent today.
