In an interesting take on “culinary diplomacy,” U.S. Ambassador to Norway Marc B. Nathanson made local news when he stopped for a hot dog at a street kiosk during a visit to the Arctic city of Tromsø, March 2. Ahead of meeting the mayor, Nathanson stopped at the locally famous Raketten Bar and Sausage Grill, which bills itself as the world’s smallest full-service bar and hot dog restaurant. From a nearby office building, he was recognized by journalists at the local newspaper “Nordlys,” and they came down to do a quick interview. An article on the front page of the newspaper soon reported: “Look Who Turned Up in the Hot Dog Queue” with a picture of the ambassador and Political Officer Adam VanDervort outside the kiosk.
