The public affairs section at the U.S. Consulate General in Shanghai hosted three artists, June 8, for a virtual event in honor of Pride Month called “Art Brings Beauty to Our World: SPACE 33 Virtual Tour and Stories from Featured Artists.” Artists Hu Jiamin (upper right), Yang Yi (lower right), and Gan Yingying (left, pictured twice), were among the artists with works shown in the 2021 consulate-organized art exhibition in the art space, SPACE 33, featuring China’s LGBTQI+ community. Nearly 60 participants joined ConGen Shanghai’s virtual event and listened to the artists’ stories. The artists shared their recent work and explained how they create their art. A common theme was the importance of self-exploration and self-expression, and the participants emphasized finding a balance between outside restrictions and self-expression.
