Embassy Bujumbura celebrates resilience in local communities

Ambassador Melanie H. Higgins (center in American flag mask) congratulated Aheza Iwacu and United for Children Burundi on their successful project to improve hygiene practices in the Buterere and Kinama zones. This project, led by Aniella Niyondiko, a Mandela Washington Fellow, distributed sanitary kits and wash stations to community members to build community resilience to coronavirus. This Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs-funded activity engaged 19 solidarity groups of more than 650 community members. After touring local schools and communities that took part in the project, Higgins was impressed by how neighbors were helping each other in the communities.
